Gornergrat Bahn to Riffelalp Hike

Riding the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat is half the fun—windows frame the Matterhorn in all its jagged glory, with glaciers and snowfields spilling across the horizon. Once at the summit, the panorama is breathtaking, but the real reward comes on the descent. Well-marked trails lead you back down the mountain at a relaxed pace, winding through alpine meadows, rocky ridges and viewpoints that seem to outdo each other with every turn.

The Matterhorn is never far from sight, shifting its profile as you go, while wildflowers and marmots add their own charm to the journey. The hike takes around two hours, making it a manageable outing for most visitors, especially since the climb has already been done for you. It’s the perfect mix of big alpine drama and approachable adventure—grand summit views without the lung-burning ascent.
