5-Seenweg Hike

This trail, also known as the Five Lakes Hike, is one of Zermatt’s most beloved for good reason. Beginning with a swift 4-minute ride on the Sunnegga funicular and a gondola up to Blauherd, this trail unfolds as one of Zermatt’s most scenic outings—five lakes, each distinct, scattered beneath the watchful eye of the Matterhorn.

The path to the first lake, Stellisee, is mostly flat, making it accessible and rewarding from the start. With its two boulders jutting from the water and the Matterhorn reflected perfectly on calm days, it’s one of the most photographed spots in the Alps, with Fluhalp mountain restaurant nearby for a pause.

From there, the route continues downhill to Grindjisee, a paradise for plant lovers with its rare moorland flora, then on toward Grünsee, where black-nosed sheep often graze against the backdrop of a former glacial basin. Benches along the way practically insist you stop and admire the views, stretching from the Matterhorn to the Weisshorn.

The next stage brings you to Moosjisee, a glacier-fed reservoir with milky-white water used for hydropower and snowmaking, before winding toward Findeln, a hamlet famed for its mountain dining. The final lake, Leisee, is especially beloved by children for its shallow, swimmable waters and play area.

The entire circuit takes about five hours, though shorter sections are possible, making it a family-friendly classic that combines accessible trails with some of Zermatt’s most iconic alpine scenery.
